As I said in my first Shelterline article, I remain honored to have accepted the baton from Maxine and to build upon the great work done at Anna Marie’s. As I find my stride, I am truly amazed at the courage and tenacity Maxine exercised to build a shelter to serve victims of domestic abuse. My hat is off to Maxine, the Staff and Board at Anna Marie’s and our community partners for providing safety and shelter to thousands of families over the years.
I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight one of our programs within Anna Marie’s, our Criminal Justice Intervention (CJI) program. Recently, I was told by one of our partners that our CJI Advocate was a “rock star” and after reading further I think you will agree with this title. Kim has worked very hard within the organization and with partners in the community to increase our ability to assist victims immediately. She was instrumental in bringing the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP) in to Anna Marie’s. With this program, law enforcement conducts the LAP at the scene and calls us with the information and encourages the victim to speak with an advocate. This significantly impacts our immediate contact with the victim and allows us the opportunity to support them through this traumatic event. Before implementing the LAP, our contact rate with victims of domestic assault was 9%. After implementation we are currently at a 60% contact rate with 27% receiving services from Anna Marie’s. We hope to continue to expand our CJI program to include more face to face contact with on-scene advocacy. With the success of our grant writing efforts and Kim’s “rock star” status, I believe we will be successful in our expansion efforts!
On a statewide level we are pleased to announce that the Legislature approved an additional 3 million dollars for crime victim services and passed legislation to strengthen criminal prosecution laws. We are very pleased to be a part of the statewide effort to end violence.
The key to our success is having strong and engaged partnerships. Thanks to all of you who support us in our efforts to end violence.
