Anna Marie’s Shelter for battered women and their children
Anna Marie’s, formerly Woman House, opened in 1979 as an emergency shelter for battered women and their children. Advocates respond to the immediate needs of women and their children who are in an abusive relationship or in fear of being battered.
Services include:
- shelter
- information and referral
- crisis line
- support groups
- assistance with housing
- medical and personal care needs
- completion of Orders for Protection
- accompaniment to court
- transportation
Anna Marie’s provides safety for women and children in the six-county region of Stearns, Benton, Sherburne, Wright, Mille Lacs, and Pine Counties.
You do not need to be a resident at the shelter to receive advocacy services, information and referral.
A former resident had this to say:
You take us in and meet our needs,
Giving us strength and support so our souls can be freed.
Never knowing what the future holds,
Standing by our sides, you make us brave and bold.
You help us fix our kids and lift our self-esteem,
When we go back out in the world, we know we can succeed.
You give us shelter, food, and tools to take with us--
When most of us leave, we'll be damned if we let another man hit us.
When I think about the women who were there for me and my son,
I'm sure one day this battle will be won.
You can't save us all, so hold your heads high,
And remember, because of you many women won't die!
I will never forget any of you. Thank you so much! With Love, A and Baby N
