Women's Advocacy Internship

Responsibilities:

  • Help women residing at Anna Marie’s shelter with daily needs
  • Provide information, advocacy, and support and advocacy to residents and community members at Anna Marie’s shelter
  • Respond to/direct/follow up with phone calls including crisis calls, arrest calls, and screenings for shelter, screenings for protective orders, and general phone calls
  • Assist with intake forms, departure forms, and other necessary paperwork
  • Assist in preparing Orders for Protection and/or Harassment Restraining Orders as time allows
  • Maintain shelter security thorough screening visitors and admitting access to the shelter
  • Accept donations from community members
  • Assist with light housekeeping tasks as needed
  • Assist with support/education groups
  • Use initiative to engage with shelter residents on a daily basis
  • Use initiative to assist team members with general duties
  • Provide transportation to residents
  • Maintain confidentiality of shelter location, client information, and staff information

Qualifications:

  • Open to women 20 years of age and older
  • Ability to work with people from diverse racial, cultural, social and economic backgrounds
  • Previous experience in crisis/resource support capacity
  • Previous experience working with issues relating to poverty, oppression, homelessness, mental illness, and chemical dependency a plus
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team
  • Excellent organization and priority setting skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good understanding of professional boundaries    
  • Commitment to non-violence
  • Professionalism
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of shelter location, client information, and staff information

Requirements:

  • Minimum time commitment of 30 hours/week or 400 hours total during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm). This is a 8-12 credit undergraduate level internship
  • Valid MN Driver’s license
  • Complete application and screening process
  • Attend Agency Orientation, Criminal Justice Intervention Advocacy Training, and any mandatory in-service training
